Welcome to the family! If you’re reading this, you’re likely standing on the edge of a very exciting decision: booking your first-ever cruise. I’m James Bowers, owner of ITS Travel Services, and I’ve seen that "where do I even start?" look on plenty of faces here in our Flushing office.
Choosing your first cruise line is a bit like choosing your first car. Do you want the reliable SUV that fits the whole family, the flashy sports car with all the gadgets, or the budget-friendly hatchback that gets you from A to B with a smile? In the world of cruising, the "Big Three", Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), each offer a totally different vibe.
Since it’s Monday, we’re kicking off our daily blog series for first-time cruisers. Over the next five days, I’m going to walk you through everything from packing hacks to avoiding the dreaded "sea legs." But today, we start with the big one: Which line is actually right for you?
The "Fun Ships": Carnival Cruise Line
Let’s start with Carnival. If you’ve ever talked to someone who just got back from a Carnival cruise, they probably used the word "fun" about fifty times. They don't call them the "Fun Ships" for nothing!
Carnival is generally the most budget-friendly option of the three. If you’re looking to book a cruise without breaking the bank, this is often our first recommendation. Prices can start surprisingly low, often around $500 per person for a week in the Caribbean. But don't let the lower price tag fool you, the value is incredible.
The Vibe: It’s a party. It’s high energy, casual, and very unpretentious. You’ll see a lot of families, groups of friends, and bachelor/bachelorette parties. I always tell my clients that if you want a vacation where you can wear flip-flops to almost everything and join a hairy chest contest by the pool, Carnival is your spot.
The Food: One thing Carnival gets right is the casual eats. Guy’s Burger Joint (partnered with Guy Fieri) serves up some of the best burgers at sea, and the best part? It’s included in your fare. I've spent many afternoons on the Carnival Conquest grabbing a burger and just watching the waves.

The "Wow" Factor: Royal Caribbean International
Now, if you want to be blown away by sheer scale and engineering, Royal Caribbean is the heavyweight champion. When people search for a "cruise specialist" and come to see us, Royal Caribbean is almost always the brand they’ve heard the most about.
Royal Caribbean owns the largest cruise ships in the world. We’re talking about "floating cities" here. They are famous for their "neighborhoods" on the ship, like Central Park (complete with real trees!) or the Boardwalk.
The Vibe: It’s a bit more polished than Carnival but still very family-oriented. It’s active. If you’re the kind of person who gets bored sitting in a lounge chair, Royal will keep you moving. They have rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, and even the "North Star", a glass capsule that takes you 300 feet above the ocean.
The Entertainment: This is where Royal really shines. Their AquaTheater shows feature Olympic-level divers jumping into deep pools from 30-foot platforms while the ship is moving. It’s breathtaking. While it can be a bit more expensive than Carnival, the variety of things to do makes it the #1 requested line for first-timers in our experience.
The Freedom Seekers: Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
Last but certainly not least is Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL pioneered something called "Freestyle Cruising," and it changed the industry.
Back in the day, cruising was very formal. You had a set dinner time (say, 6:00 PM), and you sat at the same table with the same people every night. NCL threw that rulebook out the window. On an NCL ship, you eat when you want, where you want, and with whoever you want.
The Vibe: Modern and contemporary. NCL feels a bit like a high-end Vegas resort that happens to be on the water. It’s great for multi-generational families because there’s something for the kids (like multi-level go-kart tracks, yes, seriously!) and something for the adults who want a bit of luxury.
The "Ship Within a Ship": If you’re looking for a "travel agent near me" because you want a luxury experience but still want the big ship amenities, I always point people toward "The Haven" on NCL. It’s an exclusive area with its own pool, restaurant, and butler service. It’s the ultimate way to feel like a VIP.

How Do They Compare on the Basics?
I know it can be overwhelming to look at all the shiny brochures, so let’s break it down by what actually matters when you’re out there on the blue water.
1. The Cost
- Carnival: Usually the winner for budget. Great for short 3-5 day "starter" cruises.
- Royal Caribbean: Middle of the road to premium. You pay for the massive ship features.
- NCL: Can be pricier upfront, but they often run "Free at Sea" promotions that include open bars or specialty dining.
2. The Food
- Carnival: Best casual, "comfort" food.
- Royal Caribbean: Incredible variety and massive dining rooms that feel like a grand ballroom.
- NCL: Best for those who hate schedules and want a "restaurant-style" experience every night.
3. The Activities
- Carnival: Water slides, mini-golf, and comedy clubs.
- Royal Caribbean: Surf simulators (FlowRider), skydiving simulators, and Broadway shows like Mamma Mia!.
- NCL: Go-karts, laser tag, and top-tier shows like Six or Jersey Boys.
Why Local Expertise Matters
You might be thinking, "James, can’t I just book this on a website?" Well, sure, you could. But here’s the thing: as a flushing mi travel agency, we know our neighbors. We know that a family from Mid-Michigan has different needs than a couple from Miami.
When you work with a cruise specialist like us, we don't just click "book." We help you pick the right deck so you aren't sleeping under the noisy disco. We help you figure out if that "all-inclusive" drink package is actually worth your money (check back on Wednesday for more on that!).
Plus, we’ve been there. We’ve sailed these ships, eaten the food, and probably dealt with the same flight delays out of Bishop International or Detroit Metro that you’re worried about. We’re here to handle the "what-ifs" so you can just focus on which swimsuit to pack.

Making the Final Call
So, which one wins for a first-timer?
If you want a party atmosphere and a great deal, go with Carnival.
If you want the "Wow" factor and non-stop activities for the kids, go with Royal Caribbean.
If you want flexibility and a modern, casual feel, go with NCL.
There isn't a "wrong" choice, but there is a "best" choice for your specific personality. That’s why we love what we do here at ITS Travel Services. We get to know you first, and then we find the ship that matches your vibe.
What’s Next?
Choosing the ship is just step one. Tomorrow, we’re going to tackle one of the most stressful parts of any vacation: the suitcase. I’m sharing my personal packing hacks: including the three things you must bring that the cruise lines won't tell you about.
