If you have been thinking about a cruise, this is a good week to pay attention.

New itineraries are opening. Panama Canal season is getting underway. A record-setting world cruise has officially departed. And some of the biggest Labor Day cruise deals have already ended.

And honestly? That last part matters.

When a major sale disappears, fares do not always jump overnight. But the best cabins, convenient departure dates and popular itineraries can become harder to find. Here’s the latest cruise news I’m watching at ITS Travel Services in Flushing, Michigan.

1. Holland America’s Oosterdam Evolution Transformation Is Arriving Early

Holland America Line has moved up the timeline for its major Oosterdam “Evolution” transformation by about five weeks.

The ship is now scheduled to return to service on October 31, 2027, earlier than originally planned.

That is exciting news for travelers who like the idea of sailing on a refreshed ship before everyone else has discovered it.

Holland America says Oosterdam will be the first ship to receive its new Evolution treatment, including improvements to:

• Staterooms and suites
• Public spaces and gathering areas
• Dining and bar venues
• Solo accommodations
• Vista Suites and other room categories
• Pinnacle Suite features
• Poolside and entertainment experiences

The goal is not to turn Oosterdam into an entirely different ship. Instead, Holland America is updating the ship while keeping the line’s familiar service style and destination-focused itineraries.

The five new Oosterdam itineraries

To take advantage of the earlier return, Holland America is adding five new cruises across the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean:

• October 31, 2027: 10-day Mediterranean cruise from Civitavecchia, Italy, near Rome, to Trieste
• November 10, 2027: 11-day Mediterranean cruise from Trieste to Piraeus, near Athens
• November 21, 2027: 7-day Mediterranean cruise from Piraeus to Barcelona
• November 28, 2027: 13-day transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale
• December 11, 2027: 11-day Caribbean cruise round trip from Fort Lauderdale

The five newly added itineraries are expected to open for booking in early October 2026.

If you want to be among the first guests aboard the transformed Oosterdam, early October is the date to watch. Holland America has already opened some other Oosterdam sailings for booking, and the cruise line expects interest to be strong.

Pro Tip: If you are interested in a brand-new or newly transformed ship, do not wait for every cabin category to appear before asking questions. 2. Regatta Has Begun the World’s Longest Cruise

On September 1, the ship Regatta departed from Civitavecchia, Italy, near Rome, on what is being billed as the world’s longest cruise.

The voyage lasts 371 days.

That is more than a year at sea, with approximately:

• 220 ports
• 62 countries
• Six continents, according to most published descriptions
• A wide mix of Mediterranean, African, Asian, North American and South American destinations

The cruise is part of Explorations by Norwegian, a new travel concept focused on smaller-ship exploration and longer, port-intensive itineraries.

Regatta has approximately 348 staterooms and suites, giving the voyage a more intimate feel than many of the largest world cruises. Travelers can experience destinations such as Japan, Africa, South America, Alaska and other regions during one continuous global journey.

Now, I realize a 371-day cruise is not exactly a quick getaway from Detroit. It is a major lifestyle decision, a major budget decision and a major calendar decision.

But the larger story is worth watching: travelers are showing more interest in extended cruises, linked cruise segments and all-inclusive vacation packages. You do not necessarily have to sail for 371 days to enjoy part of the route. Some segments are available for shorter periods, making the concept more approachable.

Regatta’s voyage also highlights how cruise lines are creating new ways to combine ocean travel, cultural experiences and long-term exploration.

For travelers who love the idea of unpacking once and seeing the world, this is a serious wow moment.

3. Panama Canal and Central American Cruise Season Is Underway

Fall is one of my favorite times to talk about a Panama Canal cruise.

Why? You can combine a relaxing cruise with an experience that feels genuinely historic and once-in-a-lifetime. Watching a ship move through the locks is not just another scenic cruising day. It is the kind of travel memory people talk about for years.

Princess Cruises: Coral Princess for 22 nights

One standout fall itinerary is a 22-night Coral Princess sailing from Vancouver to Fort Lauderdale.

The itinerary includes destinations such as:

• Vancouver
• San Francisco
• San Diego
• Los Angeles
• Puerto Vallarta
• Huatulco
• Puerto Chiapas
• Puntarenas, Costa Rica
• Fuerte Amador and Panama City
• Full transit of the Panama Canal
• Aruba
• Fort Lauderdale

Published starting pricing has been around $2,029 per person for an oceanview stateroom, based on double occupancy and subject to availability.

The sailing departs Vancouver on September 23, 2026, making it a timely option for travelers who can leave soon and want a longer repositioning cruise with multiple destinations built in.

Holland America: Nieuw Amsterdam

Holland America is also operating its fall Panama Canal program, including a 21-night Nieuw Amsterdam itinerary departing September 27, 2026.

This type of sailing is a good match if you prefer:

• A longer, slower-paced vacation
• More scenic cruising
• Several days at sea to enjoy the ship
• A mix of Central American and Caribbean ports
• The option to add flights, hotels or transfers

Here’s the thing: longer itineraries can sometimes offer better value per night than short cruises, especially when you factor in accommodations, meals and entertainment. Of course, the total trip cost still depends on airfare, excursions, taxes, travel protection and the cabin you select.

That is where comparing the full vacation package: not just the cruise fare: really helps.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line Has Fall Caribbean Options from Orlando

If you want a warm-weather escape without flying to Miami, Norwegian Cruise Line has fall Caribbean sailings from Orlando, which means Port Canaveral.

Several itineraries combine Great Stirrup Cay with a stop in the Dominican Republic, often Puerto Plata.

Examples include:

• Norwegian Prima: 7-day round-trip Orlando cruise featuring Great Stirrup Cay and the Dominican Republic
• Norwegian Escape: 7-day round-trip Orlando cruise featuring the Dominican Republic, Tortola and Great Stirrup Cay
• Norwegian Getaway: 5-day Caribbean sailing from Port Canaveral with Great Stirrup Cay and Puerto Plata

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas. The island has beaches, water activities, cabanas, snorkeling and expanded facilities planned for the 2026 season.

The Dominican Republic adds a completely different flavor, with excursions involving historic sites, beaches, local culture and mountain scenery.

The official Norwegian Cruise Line Great Stirrup Cay guide lists selected 2026 itineraries and published starting fares. One 7-day Norwegian Prima itinerary was shown from approximately $629 per person, including taxes, fees and port expenses. Cruise pricing is capacity-controlled, so verify the current price before making plans.

5. Labor Day Cruise Deals Have Ended: So What Happens Now?

This is the part I want to be straight with you about.

• Deposits were as low as $25 on qualifying bookings
• Some guests could receive up to $400 in onboard credit
• Princess Cruises’ 40% off sale ended September 8, 2026

If you missed those offers, do not panic. Cruise lines regularly introduce new promotions. But do not assume the same deal will return immediately: or that the same cabin will still be available.

A cabin with a good location can disappear even when the sailing itself remains open. Balcony rooms, connecting cabins, accessible rooms and preferred dining times may be limited.

• Choose Norwegian Cruise Line from Orlando if you want Great Stirrup Cay, the Dominican Republic and an easy Florida departure port.

The expired Labor Day sales are a reminder that cruise deals can change quickly. If you have a preferred travel month, cabin type or destination, waiting too long may mean paying more or settling for a less convenient option.
