If you have been thinking about a cruise, this is a good time to pay attention. Today’s cruise news includes a major Princess Cruises disruption in Alaska, new Norwegian Cruise Line entertainment, an accelerated Holland America ship transformation, and several time-sensitive cruise deals.
And honestly? September is often when we see some of the best cruise deals 2026 has offered, but availability can change quickly.
Here’s what I’m watching today from ITS Travel Services in Flushing, Michigan.
Quick-Hit Cruise News: What You Need to Know
- Princess Cruises: Royal Princess experienced propulsion issues during its September 12–19 Alaska sailing, causing Juneau and Ketchikan to be cancelled. Affected guests are receiving a 50% cruise-fare refund.
- Princess 2027 policies: Princess has introduced six operational and booking changes, including expanded itineraries, a standardized 120-day final payment deadline, higher deposits, and stricter cancellation penalties.
- Norwegian Cruise Line: The classic Norwegian Sky has left the NCL fleet as the line continues replacing older ships with newer, larger vessels.
- Norwegian Aura: The new mega-ship debuts in May 2027 with “Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston” as its headline production.
- Holland America: Oosterdam’s Evolution transformation has been moved up by five weeks because of strong guest demand.
- Costa Cruises: The “Fall into Savings” promotion offers major savings on select Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Canary Islands sailings.
1. Princess Cruises Offers 50% Refund After Royal Princess Disruption
Royal Princess encountered a technical propulsion issue during its seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise from Seattle.
The problem did not affect the safety of guests or crew, but it limited the ship’s speed. As a result, the ship could not maintain its original itinerary and cancelled calls at Juneau and Ketchikan.
Passengers still visited Skagway, enjoyed scenic cruising in Glacier Bay, called at Victoria, British Columbia, and returned to Seattle on September 19.
Princess is issuing affected passengers a 50% refund of their cruise fare to the original form of payment. The cruise line also automatically credited eligible shore excursions booked through Princess in the cancelled ports.
You can read more details in this report on the Royal Princess disruption.
What does this mean for you?
First, it is a reminder that cruise itineraries can change. Ports may be missed because of weather, mechanical problems, port congestion, or other operational issues.
Second, it is a good reason to consider travel insurance. A policy may help with certain missed excursions, delays, medical needs, trip interruptions, and other covered problems (the exact benefits depend on the plan).
I know nobody loves talking about insurance when they are dreaming about Alaska or the Caribbean. I get it. But when a bucket-list trip changes suddenly, having protection can make a real difference.
2. Princess Tightens 2027 Booking Rules (This Deadline Matters)
Princess has also introduced a six-part set of operational and booking changes for new reservations made for 2027 and later sailings.
The changes include:
- Expanded itinerary options for the 2027 season
- A standardized 120-day final payment deadline
- Revised cancellation penalty periods
- Higher standard deposits on many bookings
- Stricter enforcement of unpaid final balances
- No grace periods or extensions after the final payment deadline
For many new 2027 bookings, final payment is due 120 days before departure. If payment is not received on time, the reservation may be automatically cancelled.
Cancellation penalties can also begin earlier and increase in stages, commonly reaching 100% of the cruise fare at 60 days or less before departure.
Princess has also made the choice between refundable and non-refundable deposit fares more important. A lower deposit option may look attractive at first, but it could leave you with less flexibility if your plans change.
Here’s the thing: these details are easy to miss when you are clicking through a big travel website at 11 p.m. That is one reason many travelers prefer working with a travel agency for cruises.
At ITS Travel Services, we can help you record the important dates, review cancellation terms, discuss travel protection, and watch your booking after you reserve it.
3. Norwegian Sky Retires as Norwegian Aura Prepares to Debut
After 27 years with Norwegian Cruise Line, Norwegian Sky has completed its final NCL voyage and is moving to a new chapter with Cordelia Cruises.
For longtime NCL guests, this may feel like the end of an era. Norwegian Sky was a smaller, familiar ship that many travelers enjoyed for shorter getaways and relaxed itineraries.
At the same time, NCL is looking ahead with Norwegian Aura, a much larger ship scheduled to debut in May 2027.
NCL recently announced the ship’s entertainment lineup, and music fans have a major reason to watch this one.
“Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston”
The new production was developed in partnership with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music. The 45-minute show will feature live vocals, a live band, immersive visuals, and some of Whitney Houston’s most famous songs, including:
- “I Will Always Love You”
- “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”
- “It’s Not Right, But It’s OK”
Norwegian Aura will also feature:
- ILLUMINOX: Infinite Wonder Unboxed, an illusion and acrobatics production
- The Vinyl Republic, a live music collective covering rock, country, funk, blues, and pop
- LunaTique: Pop Circus, an adults-only late-night experience
The ship’s inaugural Mediterranean voyage departs May 21, 2027, from Trieste to Barcelona, followed by a transatlantic crossing to Miami.
If Norwegian Aura sounds like your jam, I would not wait too long. New ships, inaugural sailings, and headline entertainment can create early demand, especially for preferred cabins and family-friendly dates.
You can review the full Norwegian Aura entertainment announcement.
4. Holland America Moves Oosterdam’s Transformation Earlier
Holland America Line has accelerated the debut of its redesigned Oosterdam after receiving strong guest interest in the Evolution program.
The dry dock is moving ahead by five weeks, and Oosterdam will return to service on October 31, 2027, with a 10-day voyage from Civitavecchia, or Rome, to Trieste.
The new post-transformation itineraries will include Mediterranean, transatlantic, and Caribbean voyages. Several previously scheduled sailings between September 11 and December 9, 2027, have been cancelled or adjusted to make room for the updated schedule.
A venue inspired by the golden age of travel
One of the most talked-about changes is the redesigned Ocean Bar.
The venue will feature:
- Art Deco-inspired design
- Details inspired by vintage travel trunks
- A new stage
- Flexible lounge seating
- Regional soloists and pianists
- Vivace Strings performances
- Late-night cabaret
It sounds like the type of place where you can enjoy a cocktail, listen to live music, and pretend, just for a little while, that you are sailing in the golden age of ocean travel.
The ship will also receive new stateroom and suite categories, a Grand Dutch Café, and additional updates as part of Holland America’s larger Evolution program.

5. Costa’s “Fall into Savings” Promotion Has a Deadline
Costa Cruises is offering its Fall into Savings promotion on more than 300 select sailings departing from November 2026 through June 2027.
Eligible regions include:
- The Mediterranean
- The Caribbean
- The Canary Islands
The advertised offer includes up to $500 off per person, plus up to $250 in onboard credit per cabin.
The promotion we are monitoring has a booking deadline of October 3, 2026. Offers are capacity-controlled, so the best cabin categories may disappear before the deadline.
The deal may be especially appealing if you are considering:
- Luxury Mediterranean cruises
- Caribbean vacation deals
- Winter sun in the Canary Islands
- A longer international vacation with hotel nights before or after the cruise
Be sure to compare the complete fare, not just the starting price. Check taxes, gratuities, flights, transfers, beverage packages, and cancellation rules before deciding.
You can review the current Costa Cruises deals page, but confirm the exact promotion terms for your sailing at the time of booking.
Sample Last-Minute Value: Coral Princess Panama Canal Cruise
Here is a real example of the kind of last minute travel deals we are watching:
Coral Princess: 22-night Panama Canal voyage
- Departure: September 23, 2026
- Route: Vancouver to Fort Lauderdale
- Sample fare: From approximately $2,029 per person
- Cabin pricing: Typically based on double occupancy
- Availability: Limited and subject to change
That works out to roughly $92 per person per night before optional extras: an interesting value for a long itinerary that includes the Panama Canal, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and a Florida finish.
This could be a good fit if you have flexible travel plans and can arrange affordable international flights or a last-minute flight to Vancouver. It may also work as part of a custom vacation package with a pre-cruise hotel and transportation.
For ship and itinerary details, see the Coral Princess itinerary information.
